Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-pharmacological treatment for many mental health conditions. In general we can alter the brain by using therapy to change the way we think, psychopharmacology to alter the brain chemistry, and we can use transcranial magnetic stimulation to alter the electrical current of the brain.

Electricity is what carries neurological signals throughout the brain. We have identified which electrical patterns are associated with a depressed brain. Using TMS, we can alter those depressed electrical patterns, which results in less depression. Think about TMS as combing a tangled electrical ball; through multiple sessions, TMS can comb that tangled ball into a smooth electrical current.

The first thing we do is map out your brain to see where the exact part of your brain that is associated with depression is located. Then, in either a 18 minute session, or a 38 minute session, we gently stimulate your brain while your watch TV, listen to music, or just relax in our treatment room.

This treatment is excellent with psychotherapy and psychopharmacology. It also works well alone. And it’s covered by most insurances.
